Steve Stricker - Madison Native Wins Memorial Golf Tourney - PGA Update

Steve Stricker, who hadn’t finished in the top 10 in his 11 previous trips to Muirfield Village, built a big lead with more flawless golf on the front nine, then relied on his silky putting stroke for two clutch pars to pull out a one-shot victory Sunday at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio.
He closed with a 4-under-par 68, lagging from 20 feet for a two-putt bogey on the 18th hole. By then, the hard work was over. Stricker saved par from bunkers on the 16th and 17th holes, making putts of 15 feet and 7 feet to go to the last hole with a two-shot lead.
“It wasn’t pretty,” Stricker said to tournament host Jack Nicklaus walking off the 18th green.
Matt Kuchar and Brandt Jobe each closed with a 65 to tie for second.
Stricker, 44, moves to No. 4 in the world ranking and becomes the highest-ranked American for the first time in his career. He won for the 10th time in his career, and the seventh time since he turned around his game five years ago.
LPGA Tour: Brittany Lincicome made a 4-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway Township, N.J., her first victory in two years. Lincicome’s birdie capped a bogey-free 5-under 66 that gave her a one-shot victory over third-ranked Jiyai Shin and No. 4 Cristie Kerr.

The PGA Tour can be a lonely place, and even lonelier if you’re playing with Rickie Fowler, who fired a two-under-par 70 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Saturday to go into the final round five back of leader Martin Laird (70).
“I heard ‘Rickie’ yelled about 17,000 times,” Vaughn Taylor, Fowler’s playing partner, said with a bemused smile after signing for a third-round 76.
And how many times did he hear his own name?
“Maybe twice,” Taylor said.
It’s obvious who the people’s choice is this week and every week, and it’s not Tiger Woods, who began the day six back but shot himself out of it with a 74.
Fowler is what the people want, and they’re getting him. He signed autographs for a good 40 minutes after his round (typical). They love him. They take off their shirts for him to stain with his Sharpie, as one elderly gentleman did Saturday. They yell for him.
“People will say anything to get him to turn around,” said Joe Skovron, Fowler’s caddie and a childhood friend from Southern California.
When Skovron was 13, Fowler was 4 ½ and joined the Valley Junior Golf Association in Temecula. Technically he was supposed to be 5, but he happened to be pretty good, plus he knew somebody – Skovron’s mom ran the VJGA.
“Someone told him he had nice hair yesterday,” Skovron continued. “It was a guy, a grown man. And then there’s the most unoriginal one: ‘Bieber!’ We’ve heard it.” Part of Fowler’s appeal is the hair. Part of it is the pastel wardrobe. (He dressed head-to-toe in pink and white, redolent of a box of Good & Plenty candy, on Saturday. Coming Sunday: Fowler as Orange Creamsicle.) Part of it is that he’s mastered the art of looking like a rock star without acting like one – a rare, Zen balancing act. Palmer could tell you all about it.
At five behind, Fowler is well within reach of the lead, especially if the wind blows, as Sunday’s forecast predicts it will. At 22 he’s finished second three times; all that separates him from mega-stardom is actually winning. Already he is the pro most likely to juice TV ratings, gate receipts and video game sales. The most electrifying moment from last fall’s Ryder Cup? Fowler authored it, making birdies on the last four holes to come from 4 down and salvage a half point against Edoardo Molinari.
It hardly seemed like a coincidence that just as Fowler and Taylor got to the tee on the par-5 16th hole Saturday, a golf cart rolled up carrying none other than Palmer himself. The players approached to pay their respects, first Taylor and then Fowler. Young enough to be his grandkids – Sam Saunders, Palmer’s grandson, fired a 69 Saturday and is tied for 38th place – Taylor and Fowler marched off toward the green, where Fowler would hole out from a bunker from 35 feet. Birdie.
That got him to seven under, but he would smash his 5-iron too far on the 221-yard, par-3 17th hole and bogey, giving the shot back and leaving him tied for fifth place with David Toms (69). They are five back, with just three men between them and Laird.
Spencer Levin (71) was at nine under, two off Laird’s lead. Bubba Watson eagled the sixth hole and shot 68 to get to 7 under with Steve Marino (71).
“The goal is to put ourselves in contention those last, probably six holes, and go at it from there,” said Fowler, who must hope the leaders don’t run away from the field.
Whatever happens, he is here to stay. His game is similar to that of three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson, whom Fowler thrashed 6&5 at the WGC-Accenture Match Play, and that’s intriguing with the Masters less than two weeks away. Fowler will get into his first Masters by virtue of his top-50 World Ranking and his finish on the 2010 money list, and he will head to Augusta for his first look Monday.
“It’ll be the first time for both of us,” Skovron said. “He’ll get a club caddie, and I’ll walk along with him, taking notes, which will be great for me. We may play some with Phil, because apparently he’s going to be there, too. He and Bones [Mickelson's caddie, Jim Mackay] have been really good to us.”
First, though, there’s the matter of the Palmer Invitational. How many back is too far back? 10 behind, as Tiger is? It’s too much. But five behind is probably not, what with Fowler having won at Bay Hill as a junior, and with the fact that he’s good in the wind. He shot 79-67-71-67 to tie for 14th at the British Open at St. Andrews. Woods will not “make a 100-footer on 18 to win” this year, as Levin remembers from watching this event on TV, but if everything breaks just right Sunday, no one will miss him at all.

Bubba to wear all white at Masters

Bubba Watson will take a cue from the tennis fashions at Wimbledon by wearing an all-white outfit each day he plays next week at the Masters.

Watson, who wears clothes designed by Travis Mathew, will be making his third career appearance at Augusta National. He is the only one of the eight TOUR pros on the Travis Mathew “team” who has an invite to this year’s Masters.
Annmarie Dodd of The Khaki Crusader, the website that broke the news, wrote that, “The idea is to find one signature look, one comfort zone, and let it play out as it will. One outfit for one tournament. I think this may be a first. It’s certainly the first I’ve ever heard of in modern golf.” (Click here for full story)
Watson’s visor is supplied by Ping, which plans to give him a special, matching visor to wear at Augusta.

Brian Wacker			EDOARDO MOLINARI. The former U.S. Amateur champ was a runner-up at Bay Hill, is a long hitter, good putter and makes birdies. This kid -- and his brother, Francesco -- can flat out play and he'll be there on the weekend.
Mike McAllister			STEVE FLESCH. A year ago, he tied for sixth. Two years ago, he tied for fifth. You've got to like that track record. But he'll need to play better than the form he's shown in his first eight starts of this TOUR season when he's finished no better than T54.
Helen Ross			STEVE MARINO. He's never fared particularly well at majors, but Marino hasn't played in that many, either. The Virginia grad has quietly played pretty well this year with a fourth at Pebble Beach and top-15s the last two weeks.
Casey Black			CHARL SCHWARTZEL. He's coming off a third-place finish at the Shell Houston Open and he has three top-10s this year, in addition to two wins on the European Tour this year.
John Swantek			FRANCESCO MOLINARI. This is the guy Wacker actually meant to take, but he always confuses the two Italian brothers. Where Edoardo is more of a feel player, Francesco is more technically sound -- and the better putter.
Lauren Deason			CHAD CAMPBELL. He lost in a playoff last year at the Masters and tied for third in 2006, so hes no stranger to success at Augusta National. Plus, hes already had three top-25 finishes this year.
Nick Zaccardi			LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN. Step aside Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer. Oosthuizen is the current European Tour dynamo with a runner-up and a win in his last two starts. I also like that he has Augusta experience.
Anne Szeker			DAVID DUVAL. He can shoot 65 or 85. Almost win, or finish next to last. He hasn't made the cut at Augusta since 2001, but prior to that had four consecutive top 10s. Duval seems to step up just when we've forgotten him, so here's hoping this is the week.
Ryan Smithson			SHINGO KATAYAMA. Not much to write about other than his surprising solo fourth here last year. It also allows me to get in a Tommy Nakajima reference. Shockingly, Wikipedia doesn't mention Nakajima's 13 on the 13th hole in 1978.

Infographics are awesome. Marketers love them - that's a given - but so do regular folks, and these days they're everywhere; offering a whimsical visual representation of virtually anything, from the cause of jet lag... to the cost of a latte... to the demographics of the internet.
At their simplest infographics are merely charts or graphs, but they can also be compelling works of an illustrator's art.

The Masters begins in a week and already it's THE major topic of conversation in golf. The tournament's distinctive history and unique traditions... combined with the wealth of statistics that come out of it each year makes it quiet "infographically friendly".
I've put together a quick word visualization infographic (above) based on early 2011 Masters picks (about 60). I culled them from predictions posted in the forum at sandtrap.com and randomly on Twitter. Yes, Tiger dominates, thus his name kind of stands out on the above. Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Nick Watson were also popular, then came Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell ... and so on. The tiniest names had only been picked by one fan as of Wednesday 4/30 PM. The pie below can only accomodate a few of the top picks. I must work on that. Anyway it's a start.
I have a feeling I'll be creating a few more visual representations of the 2011 Masters before it's over.

Nicklaus Turns To Foley to Prepare For Masters Return on 25th Anniversary of 1986 Win

According to various news sources, Canadian swing coach to the stars Sean Foley is working with legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus to prep him for one final Masters tournament, despite the former green jacket winner saying he was done playing at Augusta. He last played The Masters in 2005.
Nicklaus’ appearance at the event comes on the 25th anniversary of his last win at Augusta. Nicklaus talked to the Associated Press about the decision this morning.

“I felt I couldn’t be competitive [at The Masters],” Nicklaus said, when asked why he stopped playing . “But I’ve been working with Sean and I’ve really found my swing again.
“I liked some of the things he had to say about my golf swing and where I needed to go,” Nicklaus added. “I like the direction because I was able to hit some of the shots I used to be able to hit feel-wise. When you get that kind of contact again, it’s good. I still want to pick his brain. I don’t really have all of his whole concept yet. But I would like to get to know him more before I fully get into it.”

Nicklaus, who has had a hip replaced more than a decade ago, was introduced to Foley by Tiger Woods, who has been working with the Canadian since last year’s PGA Championship.
Nicklaus said he had a discussion earlier this year with son Jackie, who caddied for the Golden Bear at his 1986 Masters win. It was Jackie who convinced him to tee it up at Augusta one more time.

“I’m not going there to win, but I feel that I can still be competitive and have a lot of fun out there with Jackie,” said Nicklaus.

Foley told ScoreGolf’s Bob Weeks that he’s spent the last few weeks either working with Woods or Nicklaus, adding the Golden Bear is hitting the ball longer than he was in his prime.

“With age, Jack’s swing has changed,” Foley told Weeks via e-mail. ”But with my knowledge of biomechanics, I’ve helped Jack reverse the aging process. If he takes the club more from the inside while limiting the use of his legs, I know we can get Jack to the point where he can be competitive. He’s put a lot of time into it.”

Foley says he’s thrilled to be working with Nicklaus, and is learning as well as instructing the golf legend.

“Everything concurs with one another – everything is everything,” Foley said. ”I could watch a successful lawyer who’s extremely successful at what he does and learn more about what I do. Also, with the golf swing, to this day, I still don’t know what’s right, but I have a pretty good idea of what’s wrong. It’s more of trying to get people, especially Tour players to stop doing the wrong things and allowing them to be their instinctive, genius selves. There’s no bigger genius than Nicklaus. He’s the talent. I’m just there to guide him, answer his questions and I don’t have all of the answers. I always try to get the answer. Sometimes it’s not just showing him videos when it’s not going right. It’s actually keeping the videos from where it’s really good and then recognizing where he was in his life from an energy level, if he was being optimistic or pessimistic. Everything is everything.”

Asked if the time spent with Nicklaus and Woods would take away from his other students, namely Hunter Mahan and Justin Rose, Foley said it wouldn’t be an issue.

“My wife does my scheduling and Jack is near Orlando, so I make it work,” said the diminutive swing coach. “Tiger only spends a limited time with me. So fitting in time with Jack isn’t really an issue.”

Foley said as a past Masters winner, Nicklaus doesn’t have to notify the tournament that he intends to play. But Nicklaus isn’t going to Augusta in a ceremonial capacity. He has served as an honourary starter in the past. Foley said he didn’t have a sense of how Nicklaus might perform at the tournament. “I don’t like to talk about expectations,” Foley said. “I’m more about goals and I think Jack just didn’t want to embarrass himself.”
Nicklaus said he’s made significant strides while working with Foley despite having largely given up competitive golf.

“I only ever enter a golf tournament with the goal of doing my best, playing the course and seeing what happens,” Nicklaus said. “Augusta is a special place to me and this is a celebration of my past successes there.”
Nicklaus added that more than anything, Foley has changed his perspective on his career and life.
“Working with Sean is really refreshing because he is an intellectual and is so well read that you can’t help but enjoy the time you spend with him,” Nicklaus said. “We’ve been working hard, but it has been fun at the same time.”

Foley said he was excited by Nicklaus returning for the tournament, and wasn’t worried about his critics.

“Look, I’m a Canadian who at 19 was a white kid at an all-black university,” said Foley, who played college golf at Tennessee State. “This couldn’t even be called criticism what I’m going through now. This is much bigger than that.”

I KNOW THIS WILL arouse suspicion since today is April Fool’s Day. But I don’t consider it any more far-fetched than the daily hullabaloo about Tiger Woods’ swing. The original source is The Onion, America’s Finest News Source.
The putting drill is pretty simple. You putt a large baby into its diaper. It can be a baby boy or a baby girl (pictured). It really doesn’t matter. Make sure the baby is face up and the diaper is clean.
Devised by an unnamed putting guru, there are a few key ideas behind the novel drill:
1. It prevents your putting stroke from breaking down. The drill forces you to use the big muscles and follow through toward the target.
2. If you can get a baby rolling smoothly, then you can stroke any golf ball and master any putting surface with ease.

OUR TESTERS SAY: Eye-catching, 440cc white head is one of the top-rated drivers. Excellent adjustability features contribute to straighter, longer drives.
PROS
DISTANCE: Shots range from "above average" to "bombed it, one of the longest tested" for majority of testers.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Very consistent results, it's both highly forgiving and accurate; R11 is a straight shooter.
FEEL: Dampened, muted, soft feel with some spring in the face; a well-balanced club that's easy to swing.
PLAYABILITY: Several faster swingers make aggressive swings without fear of a hook due to clubface adjustability; many testers hit it higher than normal.
LOOK: White head looks odd initially, but a majority of testers find that the distraction quickly becomes a non-issue; white makes clubhead look larger.
CONS
The white paint job and crown graphics have detractors; a few testers don't care for cushioned impact feel.

Key Technologies: The adjustable soleplate can be rotated into one of three positions to determine face angle at address (2° open, 2° closed or neutral). This combines with "movable weight" technology and "flight control" technology to create the company's most adjustable driver to date. Now you can adjust face angle and loft independently of one another.
OUR TESTERS SAY: Among the top drivers tested; excellent playability results.
PROS
DISTANCE: Provides solid distance, particularly when testers get it set up properly for their swing.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: The center of the clubface is easy to find, which is mighty helpful when trying to correct directional misses.
FEEL: Pleasing, solid thud on center hits with little harshness on mis-hits.
PLAYABILITY: R11 TP really shines here; testers execute a wide variety of shots with relative ease.
LOOK: Attractive shape and deep clubface frame ball; white crown and black clubface provide a unique alignment system.
CONS
White crown takes some getting used to; a few find it's not a particularly powerful feel at impact.

After the success of the r7 and R9 drivers, the release of TaylorMade's third generation R11 adjustable driver was bound to cause a buzz in the equipment world.
But even before the pros at Kapalua start tinkering with TaylorMade's newest model, they'll notice the glaringly obvious thing that sets it apart—it's white.
"The satin white finish, along with the black face, creates the maximum contrast between face and crown to help you align the club more easily," says Tom Olsavsky, TaylorMade's director of product creation (metal woods). Olsavsky adds that the white finish helps to reduce the hot spots and glare often created on glossy-topped drivers.
Rumors have been swirling over the past few months that TaylorMade was planning to release a white driver, but many those rumors failed to mention the R11’s new level of customization. In previous models, TaylorMade's torque wrench was used to adjust the face angle, which automatically changed the club's loft as well. In the R11, loft and face angle are adjusted independently.
In the r7 and R9, an aluminum sleeve attached to the shaft, which screwed into the head in a variety of face angles. Not anymore. Now the R11's sleeve has eight settings to increase or decrease the effective loft by as much as one degree.
Face angle is controlled by an adjustable aluminum sole plate. By moving the red triangular plate into the closed, neutral or open position, you can adjust the look at address. The face settings range from 4 degrees open to 4 degrees closed.
Like the r7 and R9 drivers, the R11 features weight ports—one in the heel and one in the toe—that allow for a draw or fade bias. The R11 comes with a10-gram screw and a 1-gram screw. Positioning the 10-gram weight in the heel promotes a draw, while putting it in the toe encourages a fade. According to TaylorMade, the movable weights provide up to 25 yards of right-and-left adjustability.
Because the club is so adjustable, the R11 driver will be available in only two lofts — 9° and 10.5°. Olsavsky says that's all the loft options that are required, even for Tour pros.
To make his point, Olsavsky says you could theoretically set a 9° R11 to have an open face at address, a draw weight bias and an effective loft of 10°. The same club could be adjusted to have a closed-face at address, a fade bias and 8° of playing loft.
In addition to all that adjustability, Olsavsky says the R11's head shape is more aerodynamic, making it at least 6 yards longer than 2010's R9 SuperTri.
The standard R11 driver will come with a 45.75" Fujikura Blur shaft and retail for $399. A TP version of the club will feature an identical head and several shaft upgrades for $499. Both drivers should arrive in pro shops in mid-February.

Golfers who are really into gear have been buzzing for weeks on message boards and blogs about white drivers. First, there was the all-white Cobra Limited Edition ZL, which Ian Poulter put into play and won with in Asia.
Next down the Great White Way will be TaylorMade's yet-to-be-released R11, the next generation of 2010's R9. A few images of Sean O'Hair testing the club were obtained by Golf.com.
As you can see, the crown of the club is white, but the sole is black.

It is so much fun to come back to Redstone and the Shell Houston Open, the place where I got to experience my first PGA TOUR event. Just to be able to come back and relive the memories when I played here in 2003, because that's when I pretty much decided this is what I wanted to do for a living.
We played the other course at Redstone then, when I got into the tournament as a Monday qualifier, but I was still here with my teachers, Franci Bettencourt and Kevin Kirk and my dad, meeting the guys and having a good time. We didn't play that good, but we made the decision to work on the things we had to do to get here.
I live here in The Woodlands, a 20-minute drive from the course. This week, my Mom and Dad are flying in from Venezuela and my brother Julio, who is playing at Texas and having a good time, is coming over. It should be a lot of fun.
It's different since won the Bob Hope Classic. I get a little more attention here at home in The Woodlands than I used to. It's nice, but totally different. I'm not used to going to a store like HEB or Kroger and having someone come up to me and say, "hey, Jhonny Vegas." We're going to get used to it.
I feel my game is headed the right way, been playing good. Some up and down weeks, but still have the confidence and playing great. Only God knows what's going to happen, but I'm going to try and win this week.
I am excited about playing Augusta. I went over and played two practice rounds and it was super exciting. I was there as a spectator in 2009 when Angel Cabrera won, so I was able to see the course that way. But I was never able to experience the whole Augusta National like I did playing a practice round. It was really exciting.
I took a friend with me. I played Monday, then on Tuesday I was able to play with Dustin Johnson and Charley Hoffman. We played a quick practice round and that was super fun because Dustin has been there quite a few times and told me a few little things you have to know about the course. It's always good to hang around with people who can teach you about Augusta. There is so much history around that place. That made life pretty nice for those couple of days.
The thing that surprised me the most was how undulating the course was. And how much you hit shots from sidehill lies. Up and down, left to right, right to left, that's what caught my attention. I don't think you hit a flat shot on that course, except on par-3s and on tee boxes. It really amazed me. It was a different perspective of the golf course. you have to really get your eyes adjusted to hit shots. It's not as easy as just hitting the ball on the fly.
I'm flying there Sunday night and will play a practice round with Angel on Monday and Ben Crenshaw, who also played at Texas, on Tuesday. I'm looking forward to talking to Ben about the greens.
I want to try to experience the full Augusta National experience . I'm going to go have a good time I'm not going to worry about it. Someone just told me Fuzzy Zoeller was the only rookie to win the Masters (editor's note: Gene Sarazen won in 1935, the tournament's second year). I'm going to try to do that too.
But first, this week.
We started off with a practice round on Sunday and a barbecue at Angel's house Sunday afternoon. A full Argentinian asado, as real as it gets. It was fun hanging out with people who have the same culture. We were just joking, talking, cooking and had a couple glasses of wine. Such a great evening.
I asked Angel about so many shots at Augusta. It was a really really fun experience. Andres Romero and Michael Connell were there too. We played cards -- a game called truco. We really went at it. It's a ranking kind of a game, played with Spanish cards.
Today, I played a practice round with Angel, Andres and Fabian Gomez. We had a little Argentia-Venezuela match going. It was Andres and Angel against me and Fabian. There was a lot of talking going on. They were 3-up after nine. We came back and beat them at 17.
So, there was little magic going on. Maybe it set up things for the whole week.

The Daily Mail reported last week that Woods and his new 22-year-old girlfriend have been spotted his yacht.
Woods reportedly offered it to his ex-wife Elin Nordegren during the divorce-settlement talks, but she turned it down.

March Madness – Jimmer… College Basketball’s Modern Day Tiger Woods

Pure domination. That’s what you see out of BYU’s Jimmer Fridette. Every time this guy hits the court he shows off another skill and how he’s many steps above the competition. Yes this is a golf discount website dedicated to Wisconsin Golfers but you can’t help but watch this guy. In my opinion he reminds me of Tiger Woods coming up in college golf, amateur tourneys, and in his first few years in the PGA. He’s leaps and bounds ahead of his competition and tonight he proved this while leading BYU to a win over a very good Wofford team. I’m guessing it didn’t bust anyone’s bracket but it was a great game no matter how you look at it. If you would have flipped back and forth between the BYU & Wisconsin Badgers games it would have been just like this. Three pointer…..Jimmer Fredette for 3, 3 Pointer, Jimmer Fredette for 2 or another assist. Two great games, two great teams. The Madness has started Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Badger Basketball Team tipped off the 2011 March Madness NCAA Tourney tonight against a very scary Belmont team. The game started slow with Belmont jumping out to an early lead. Known for their 3 point shooting Bo Ryan and company came in with a very solid game plan. Play solid defense, period. Through the first half the teams fought back and forth with multiple lead changes and neither could pull away. The Badgers came out determined at the start of the second half and Jordan Taylor took control. Nailing 3 pointers from just about everywhere on the basketball course Taylor showed his skillful poise and why he's the team leader. With just under 4:00 to play I started bouncing over to the BYU game just to catch a glimpse of the very entertaining Jimmer Fredette. As most expected in that showdown with Wofford, BYU and team Jimmer took control and made short work of the Terriers. That game stayed fairly close until a few minutes in to the 2nd half so it was great to watch. I recommend watching this team to any basketball fan just because of Jimmer. Pretty exciting and very rarely will there be a dull moment.

Friday kicks off another lineup of Basketball Madness and the Badgers won't hit the court again until Saturday. With that being said...get out and golf sports fans! The Wisconsin weather forecast is calling for WARM so courses and driving ranges will begin opening. As die hard golfers ourselves, the Birdie Book Guys will keep you posted to what courses open first. We all have golf fever so if you hear something before we do please shoot us an email. The 2011 March Madness betting is finally here, and as we do every year, we will take a look at possible sleepers that are capable of busting up some brackets.

Before moving on to our top four double-digit seeds that can do some damage, we would like to point out that both Texas and Kentucky seem under-seeded as four seeds, and it would not be surprising to see both of those teams in the Elite Eight and quite possibly one in the Final Four.

We now move on to our 2011 NCAA Tournament Sleepers (seed in parenthesis):

Gonzaga Bulldogs (11): The Bulldogs finished the year strong, winning their last nine games to wind up at 24-9 including a decisive 12-point win over St. Mary’s in the WCC Championship Game. They may also get the good fortune of facing teams missing star players in the first two rounds. In fact, Gonzaga is actually ranked higher in the Pomeroy Ratings (27th) than its first opponents St. John’s (35th), as the Red Storm will be without the injured D.J. Kennedy. If the Zags get past the Johnnies, they may then face the BYU Cougars without the suspended Brandon Davies, and that is assuming BYU gets by 14th seeded Wofford, which is no longer a given.

Richmond Spiders (12): The Spiders may be the least known 27-7 team in the country, and they are ranked 47th overall in the Pomeroy Ratings. Richmond has won 11 of its last 12 games with the only loss coming on the road at Temple, a loss the Spiders avenged in the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals. Richmond draws Vanderbilt in the first round. Keep in mind that the SEC has dropped to the seventh ranked conference in the country according to Pomeroy, and the Commodores are just the third best team in that conference. Should the Spiders advance, they would probably draw Louisville. NCAA Tournament First Round Historical Trends & Betting Tips

We are now just days away from the start of the 2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament, so we went back and analyzed how each seed has done in the first round over the last 10 years.

Play-in Game Trends

We also took a look at the play-in games since 2001, which in the past has been just one game on the Tuesday of the first week between the 64th and 65th seeds in the entire tournament. With the field expanding to 68 teams this year though, there are now four play-in games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The favorites have gone 6-4 straight up in the play-in games the last 10 years, but they are just 4-5-1 against the spread with a slim average winning margin of +2.4 points. Now the play-in winners have never gone on to win in the main bracket of 64 teams, but they have gone a respectable 4-6 ATS vs. the top seeds.

Top Seeds Only 52% ATS

Most people know that a one seed has never lost outright in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and the average winning margin for the 40 top seed winners over the last 10 years has been +26.4 points. However, the top seeds are only 20-18-2, 52.6 percent ATS in Round One obviously due to inflated lines. The closest call for a one seed the last 10 years came when the Pittsburgh Panthers defeated East Tennessee State by 10 points in 2009.

#2 Seeds 45% ATS L10 Years

Two seeds are 39-1 straight up in the first round the past decade, with the only loser coming when Hampton shocked Iowa State back in 2001. The two seeds have been worse bets than the one seeds in Round One, going 18-22, 45.0 percent ATS despite a good average winning margin of +15.8 points. Besides Iowa State’s loss, the narrowest escape by a two seed came in a one-point win by Duke over Belmont in 2008 where the Blue Devils had to overcome a double-digit second half deficit.

The 2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament begins this week, and for the first time there is a round of four play-in games on Tuesday and Wednesday before the main bracket of 64 teams.

The upsets we are predicting here are in the round of 64 on Thursday and Friday, which used to be the first round but is now referred to as the second round.

Wofford Terriers +8 (+330 money-line): We are starting off with our biggest upset of all as the Terriers are facing a vulnerable BYU team. The Cougars are 2-2 straight up and 1-3 against the spread since the suspension of Brandon Davies, with the lone cover coming vs. a bad Wyoming team. Not only was Davies a double-digit scorer but he was a good defender and his absence leaves the Cougars undersized. Sure, Wofford comes out of the Southern Conference, but the Terriers easily covered the spread in a four point loss to Wisconsin in the first round last season, and they can exploit the BYU defense here as they rank a good 40th in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency and 24th in effective field goal percentage at a nice 53.3 percent.

Penn State Nittany Lions +2½ (+130 money-line): Some eyebrows were raised when Penn State made the tournament with 14 losses, but the Nittany Lions did close the season well and the Big Ten is the highest ranked conference in the country on the Pomeroy Ratings, so they should be battle tested for the Temple Owls here. Penn State went 7-3 the last 10 games with two of the losses coming vs. top ranked Ohio State, and they covered the spread in the other loss at Wisconsin, which is no small feat. Now Temple is a fine team that went 14-2 in Atlantic 10 play, but its only statement non-conference win came over Georgetown back in December, and besides the Hoyas, the Nittany Lions are higher ranked by Pomeroy (39th) than any other team that Temple has beaten.

Memphis Tigers +5½ (+210 money-line): Memphis may not have made this tournament if it did not win the Conference USA Tournament, but this money line makes this play worthwhile vs. what we feel as an overrated Arizona team. We are not high on the Pac-10 this season, and the Arizona defense could prove to be a big liability here. The Wildcats rank 280th in the country in two point defense at a whopping 50.5 percent and they are 256th in forcing turnovers at 18.8 percent of opponents’ possessions. That makes for a difficult matchup vs. a Memphis offense that ranks 49th in two point shooting at 50.9 percent, and the Tigers are also an excellent offensive rebounding team, ranking 84th in that category.

Illinois Fighting Illini +2 (+115 money-line): We thought it was pretty slim pickings when looking for another upset, so we opt for a small upset call here with an Illinois team that is actually ranked 20th on the Pomeroy Ratings, no doubt helped by a Big Ten schedule. That Pomeroy Rating is actually two spots higher than UNLV, and the Runnin’ Rebels had a couple of questionable losses vs. UC Santa Barbara and Colorado State this season. Yes, UCSB made this tournament, but the Gauchos are still ranked only 125th by Pomeroy while Colorado State is ranked 78th overall.

The United States Golf Association has named Erin Hills, a daily-fee public golf course about 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee in the town of Erin, Wis., as the site of the 2017 U.S. Open. The USGA has also announced its intention to award the 2018 U.S. Amateur and 2019 U.S. Open Championships to Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.

"We are thrilled to bring the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur to these two outstanding golf venues," said Jim Hyler, USGA president. "Pebble Beach offers a spectacular setting and boasts a long tradition of major championship golf. Erin Hills, though just a few years old, has justifiably earned its reputation as one of the premier facilities in the nation."

For Erin Hills, the 2017 U.S. Open will mark the third USGA championship in its short history. It was the site of the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, and will serve as the site of the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship, to be contested August 22-28.

Opened in 2006 and designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Ron Whitten, Erin Hills was constructed on 652 acres of rolling topography in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine region. When it debuted, the course won praise for its minimalist design. However, some revisions were needed to prepare it to host a major championship. The facility recently underwent an extensive renovation by golf course specialist Landscapes Unlimited of Lincoln, Neb.

"Erin Hills boasts one of the greatest natural inland sites for a golf course that I have ever seen," said Mike Davis, USGA senior director of Rules and Competitions. "It was designed and is managed in ways that are respectful of the environment - and it also happens to be an excellent test of golf."
Wisconsin has hosted 11 USGA national championships through 2010, but this will be the first U.S. Open ever played in the state.
"I'm deeply honored that Erin Hills has been selected to host the 117th U.S. Open, and I thank the USGA for its confidence in our ability to produce an outstanding championship," said Andrew Ziegler, owner of Erin Hills. "[Former owner] Bob Lang had a wonderful vision for Erin Hills. We are building on that vision through significant course renovations and are dedicated to providing a world-class test of golf for players at both the 2011 U.S. Amateur and the 2017 U.S. Open."

The 2018 U.S. Amateur and 2019 U.S. Open Championships will continue the long relationship between the USGA and Pebble Beach, dating back to the 1929 U.S. Amateur. These will be the 12th and 13th national championships at Pebble Beach and mark the second time the facility will host these two championships in consecutive years. Previously, the course hosted the U.S. Open in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000 and 2010; the U.S. Amateur in 1929, 1947, 1961 and 1999; and the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1940 and 1948.
Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas S. Grant, Pebble Beach will celebrate its centennial in 2019. "There's a wonderful symmetry for the 2019 U.S. Open," said Thomas J. O'Toole, Jr., chairman of the USGA's championship committee. "Pebble Beach hosted our 100th U.S. Open in 2000. Now, we return to celebrate their centennial with our national championships."
"We take great pride in our relationship with the USGA and this announcement is truly a special moment in our history," said Bill Perocchi, the chief executive officer of the Pebble Beach Company. "To celebrate our centennial by conducting the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur will be a thrill for everyone associated with Pebble Beach."

The awarding of the 2018 U.S Amateur and 2019 U.S. Open to Pebble Beach was approved by the USGA Executive Committee at a recent meeting in Pebble Beach. The final approval of these championships is pending contractual agreement.

In naming the sites for the 2017 and 2019 U.S. Open Championships, the USGA reaffirms its commitment to bringing the U.S. Open to venues that are open to the public. From 1999 through 2019, the U.S. Open will have been played at Pinehurst No. 2 (1999, 2005 and 2014), Pebble Beach (2000, 2010 and 2019), Bethpage State Park (2002 and 2009), Torrey Pines (2008), Chambers Bay (2015) and Erin Hills (2017), making a total of 11 U.S. Opens in 21 years on publicly accessible courses.

Prior to 2017, the U.S. Open will be conducted at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. (2011); The Olympic Club in San Francisco (2012); Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. (2013); Pinehurst No. 2 in The Village of Pinehurst, N.C. (2014); Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. (2015); and Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania (2016). TECH TALK: The movable weights of the original r7 and the adjustable hosel of the R9 are joined by a rotating soleplate that independently changes the driver's face angle for 48 possible settings. As a result, the adjustments in loft and lie from the hosel don't affect the driver's appearance at address. The purpose of the white paint job is to eliminate possible glare at address.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "It's ahead of the curve visually. They tried something different, and it works." ... "It's easy to work this club any way I want, and the distance is superb."
M: "The adjustability is complex but not complicated. The soleplate is idiot-proof."

HOT: Getting more distance from your driver has less to do with springlike faces and huge clubheads these days. Instead, it's about getting the most from each golfer's swing. The R11's adjustability makes achieving this goal easier than with any other club on the market.
NOT: Even with 2 degrees of launch adjustability, this is still a driver for better players.

TECH TALK: The adjustable hosel allows the club's loft and lie angle to be manipulated independently to any of 16 settings. The purpose is to help optimize each player's launch conditions. The D2 and D3 (smaller head designed to spin less) feature a thinner crown than previous Titleist drivers to help lower the CG. The face design has a thick center section equidistant from the perimeter for maximizing ball speed.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "I love how the alignment aid frames the face." ... "You can hit the shot you want with this club."
M: "The adjustability is spot-on: One degree open looks like 1 degree open." ... "The feel is solid."
H: "It's easy to hit, and hit long. I'm starting to tire out, and this club still gets it out there."

HOT: Adjustability doesn't have to be about a wide range of flight patterns as much as finding each player's individual setting. Titleist has done that here in a way that will please its target audience and probably a few others, too.
NOT: At 320 grams, it's among the heaviest drivers on the market.

ADAMS
SPEEDLINE F11

TECH TALK: Adams addresses the aerodynamic inefficiencies of a large driver head by adding ridges to the back of the crown and sole to help reduce the speed-sapping effect of drag during the downswing. The F11 is also 4 percent larger front to back than last year's Fast 10, which gives it a more forgiving shape.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "The look on this is beyond funky, but I absolutely pounded it. It was solid with wonderful sound." ... "Crisp and explosive. What would've been hooks were only slight draws with this driver."
M: "The lines on the crown are much less distracting than you'd think. Feels easy to swing; I don't have to work at it." ... "I hit high, straight bombs with it."

HOT: Adams has devoted serious time and energy to solving the aerodynamics riddle posed by drivers with larger, more confidence-inspiring shapes. The F11 gets us closer to an answer than most.
NOT: We'd like to see an even larger, more forgiving face.

COBRA S3

TECH TALK: After studying the impact pattern of thousands of golfers, Cobra designed an elliptical sweet spot on its face from low heel to high toe to improve ball speed on off-center hits in those areas. The club has a three-way adjustable hosel that--starting from the neutral position--rotates the face 1.5 degrees closed to 1.5 degrees open. A non-adjustable offset model (S3 Max) is available.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "Clean lines, classic shape. No way to miss this to the right." ... "The trajectory? Wow. Looks like a bullet coming out of a barrel."
M: "The big face makes up for the smaller-looking head." ... "A nice, firm, crisp sound--not a lot of the harsh aftertaste that you've had with previous Cobra drivers."

HOT: Cobra's face-technology story had become stale; this change seems intriguing and effective. We also like that the shaft length stays at a manageable 45½ inches.
NOT: Cobra had a light, 45-gram shaft a generation ago. It needs to revisit lightweight drivers.

MACHSPEED BLACK

TECH TALK: Nike's aerodynamics research led to shape changes: A tapered heel section and a diffuser pattern on the sole aim to reduce drag. The club's total weight is less than 300 grams thanks in part to a 50-gram Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki shaft. The purpose of the lighter weight is to help players increase clubhead speed. The head also has an eight-way adjustable hosel.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "The neutral setting is actually shut, but if you inch it to the right you can get a good look."..."The ball went straight, even mis-hits."
M: "Looks substantial. I like the weight. The ball rebounds nicely." ... "The square version looks like bathroom tile. Way too loud."

HOT: This is a big improvement over last year's model. The larger, faster face and sleeker, less jarring shape are upgrades. A choice of square or round clubhead (with meaningful adjustability) is a plus.
NOT: The adjustable hosel borders on dog-collar size, and the square version is a nonstarter for many.

PING K15

TECH TALK: An external weight pad near the heel accounts for about 10 percent of the clubhead's weight and is designed to keep players from leaving the face open at impact. The K15 features the largest face of any Ping driver. Recessed sections on the rear crown allowed engineers to save weight for a lower CG.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "Even though the crown is elongated, it sits very square. I can feel the ball fast off the face."
M: "This added piece in the back is distracting. I wish they could have hidden it more. However, the distance was excellent. The ball just flew off the face."
H: "Massive head shape, but that makes it easy to hit."

HOT: Here's to innovating in a way that offers genuine benefit for struggling golfers without forcing them to use a club that makes them feel like an invalid.
NOT: The massive address-position visual borders on a training-wheels sort of look.

SRIXON Z-STAR

TECH TALK: The all-titanium head features two weight ports in the heel and back sole that can be filled with a choice of four weights (a three-gram screw, two seven-gram screws and an 11-gram screw). There are 168 combinations of loft-, lie-, and weight-position adjustments. In addition, the adjustable hosel accommodates 12 settings from draw to fade.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "Might be the best marriage of head and shaft I've seen. The adjustability in two ways with the weights and the hosel is cool, and the face is hot."
M: "If I were playing in the dark, I could tell you where I hit this and go walk right to it."

HOT: This Z-Star gets high marks for an adjustable element that is so sophisticated the company has developed a smart-phone app (available this spring) to walk you through it. The innovative face, with its five separate thicknesses and multiple bulge and roll angles, maximizes off-center hits.
NOT: A driver that requires an app to decode? Really?

TOUR EDGE
EXOTICS XCG-4

TECH TALK: The head features three separate materials: titanium body and face, carbon-fiber crown and sole pieces, and tungsten inserts in the rear sole. The mix of heavy tungsten and light carbon helps lower the CG so players can launch the ball higher with less spin. All parts are joined by a brazing technique that saves weight compared with traditional welding methods. The face has thicker areas shaped like a boomerang to optimize springlike effect and feel.

PLAYER COMMENTS:
L: "Perfect look. Very little sidespin. Tough to miss fairways with this."
M: "The ball launches high, gets up there, and keeps on going. The look, swingweight, balance and feel are all great. It sounds like a cannon blast. But for this kind of distance, it'd be worth getting used to."

HOT: Tour Edge's Exotics line keeps pushing the possibilities of material combinations and manufacturing efforts. We applaud the effort to bring a sub-280-gram version with a 46-gram shaft.
NOT: The sound is clangy for some.

DORAL, Fla. (AP)—Tim Clark, Bubba Watson and Ben Crane have withdrawn from the Cadillac Championship, leaving the World Golf Championship field with only 66 players.

Clark has not played since his runner-up finish in the Sony Open at the start of the year because of an elbow injury. Watson cited an illness, while Crane is coping with a bad back.

Crane first felt recurring back pain at the Match Play Championship two weeks ago, when he lost in the third round to Miguel Angel Jimenez. Watson also starred at the event, reaching the semifinals.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP)—Nick Price matched the lowest round in Champions Tour history, eagling two of final four holes Friday for a career-best 11-under 60 in the Toshiba Classic.
Seeking his fourth victory on the 50-and-over tour, Price eagled the par-5 15th and 18th holes and had seven birdies in a bogey-free round at Newport Beach Country Club.
“There was a flash in my mind when I eagled 15, I sort of thought to myself, if I birdie the last three holes, I can break 60,” Price said. “I’ve never done that before.”
Tom Purtzer shot a 60 in the 2004 event. Isao Aoki (1997 Emerald Coast Classic), Walter Morgan (2002 AT&T Canada Senior Open), Bruce Fleisher (2002 RJR Championship), Jim Thorpe (2003 Long Island Classic) and Craig Stadler (2005 Blue Angels Classic) also have shot 60 on the tour.
Price, a three-time major champion with 18 PGA Tour victories, had a five-stroke lead over Bernhard Langer, Mark O’Meara, Mark Wiebe and Brad Bryant. Defending champion Fred Couples opened with a 66.
The 54-year-old Price hit a 2-iron approach from 218 yards to 2 feet to set up the eagle on the 495-yard 15th, then chipped in from off the green on the 510-yard 18th.
At the beginning of the year, Price decided to make some switches with his equipment, switching his driver and irons and going with a blade belly putter instead of a mallet. They were similar to his old clubs, but with some minor adjustments.
“It’s funny when you start playing well, it’s not one particular thing, it’s a combination of a lot of little things,” Price said. “The few times, three or four times that I’ve run into really good streaks in my career, that’s what did it.”
Langer, coming off a victory Feb. 20 in the ACE Group Classic in Naples, Fla., had a double bogey on one of the easiest holes on the course when his 8-iron shot on the 143-yard, par-3 fourth hit the bank in front of the green and rolled back into the pond.
I could have hit maybe a 7,” Langer said. “I pulled my 8 a fraction and it still came up a little short. It might have been a 7.”
The 2008 Toshiba champion then bogeyed the par-4 sixth and failed to birdie the relatively easy 18th.
“I’m a little ticked off that I didn’t birdie 18,” Langer said. “I had a beautiful drive down there.”
Ian Baker-Finch shot a 74 in his Champions Tour debut.

Tiger Woods Shanks a Drive - Golf News & Wisconsin Coupons/Deals

Finally, almost every golfer in the world can say that they have outdriven Tiger Woods.

On the second tee of his second round today at the WGC Cadillac Championship, Woods hit what must rank as one of the two or three worst shots of his career. On Twitter, Randall Mell of the Golf Channel described it as "a low hackers duck hook that barely went 100 yards off 2nd tee." (It was actually measured at 122 yards.)

Golf World's Ron Sirak called it a "stank job." Wonder if he meant "shank job"? No matter - "stank" works just as well.

So there you go, folks: Head out to the golf course, pound a drive 123 yards, and gloat about outdriving Tiger Woods. But Tiger went on to salvage a bogey after his terrible drive. Good luck with that one.

(By the way, Woods' 122-yard drive failed to clear the forward tees, a k a the "ladies tees." Some of you probably have a tradition for such situations ...)

On March 11, 1945, Byron Nelson won the Miami International Four-Ball with Harold “Jug” McSpaden as his partner. It was the beginning of an extraordinary win streak that has never been matched on the PGA Tour and is one of the greatest individual streaks in the history of sports.

A month after Nelson’s death in 2006, President George W. Bush approved a resolution to honor the golf great with the Congressional Gold Medal for his numerous contributions to the game.
