RORY MCILROY SHOT A THIRD round 75 as high winds blew the Dubai Desert Classic wide open. The 21-year old finished the day tied for the lead on eight under par with Dane Anders Hansen and South Africa’s Thomas Aiken. But there are now 30 players within five shots of the leaders with Tiger Woods lurking ominously just a stroke off the pace after a battling 72 that featured an eagle, four birdies, four bogeys and a double.
McIlroy was simply pleased that he managed to dig deep and limit the damage after high winds caused major problems for the afternoon starters. After bogeys at the first three holes, the world No 7 did well to drop just one shot at the seventh before covering his last 11 holes in one under par.
“I just got off to a rough start but I thought I steadied the ship really well,” McIlroy said after hitting just five fairways in winds gusting over 25 mph.
A year ago, McIlroy might have lost his patience and the plot but he did well in the end to remain in the lead and he puts that down to maturity.
“There’s been a few rounds that I let get away from me, the second round at The Open last year, being a prime example, and I didn’t let that happen today, which was a positive sign,” he said.
Woods went out in 39 but started the back nine eagle-birdie and eventually came home in 33 thanks to a sliding, left to right, 15 foot birdie putt at the 18th. He punched the air after that one to earn a final-round pairing with Sergio Garcia, who led by two shots at one stage but came home in 41 for a 75 that leaves him in a seven-way share of fourth.
Asked to comment on a less than orthodox 72, Woods joked: “18 pars. I don’t know what you’re talking about.
“No, it was tough out there. I got off to a tough start there and battled back and then lost it just before the turn; and battled back again and lost it again at 16 and then battled back at 18. So, it was a tough day.”
After struggling to control his ball in windy conditions, Woods expected to finish the day several shots behind but Garcia double bogeyed the 17th when he tried to drive the green, hit a tree and ended up being forced to take a penalty drop from a bush in the desert.
Woods said: “We have a bunched leaderboard. There’s a bunch of guys with a chance to win tomorrow. Sergio and Rory didn’t pull away.”
Conditions are forecast to be similar on Sunday and McIlroy knows that he will have to be more patient than ever if he is to get his second European Tour victory.
Garcia lamented his back luck on 17 but he despite his 41 on the back nine, he knows he’s still got a fighting chance in the final round.
“I didn’t play the back nine that badly,” he claimed. “I hit a couple bad shots, but I was holding it nicely.”
Michael Hoey bogeyed the last for a 73 but at six under par he is just two shots off the pace in a share of 11th while world No 1 Lee Westwood is just three behind on five under after a 72.
“Might have a sniff at it,” Westwood said. “You never know.”

Golfdotz/Golf Gear/2011 Birdie Book/ Wisconsin Golf Discounts Coupons

Golfdotz: Golf ball marking technology for the 21st century
PackagesRule 12-2 in the 2008 USGA Rules of Golf states “The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball.” Anyone who plays competitive golf knows the importance of being able to identify your ball. In fact, the people at Sanford, the makers of the Sharpie Marker, have made more than a little money from the golf industry by this very fact.
But what about those who find a simple dot too dreary? What about those golfers out there who want to express themselves artistically? Well, fear no more, decorative duffers, as Golfdotz is here to help.
Golfdotz are the new generation in golf ball marking technology. They are golf ball tattoos – tiny decals that transfer onto the cover of a golf ball. They come in many different designs including skulls, hearts, flames, ladybugs and more. The retail at $5.99 a pack which will get you enough for two dozen balls, and are offered in a wide array of designs.
But how do they work? Read on.
Initial Thoughts and SetupI mark my ball with two red dots, nothing fancy. So when I got this review I was skeptical of Golfdotz really having a place in the golf industry. I was ready to file them under the unneccessary equipment category with stroke counters and iron covers. But I was wrong, they are actually better than that. They are an interesting concept to say the least, the ability to put an after-factory logo on a golf ball with relatively no mess.
Golfdotz come two sheets to a pack with the decals somewhat close to one another. You first have to cut out each decal before you apply them. Once the decals are separated all you have to do is hold them firmly in place with your thumb on a clean golf ball. It’s pretty easy. I applied them to 25 golf balls while field testing them and never had one give me a problem. If you can’t do it maybe ask the neighbor’s kindergartener to help you out.
Sheets
To get a overall look at them, I applied them to several different types of golf balls from softer urethane covered performance golf balls to rock-hard surlyn covered distance balls. They look pretty cool once you get them on. Someone would be hard pressed to distinguish them from a logo that was applied at the factory.
PerformanceOnce I got them all on it was time to take them on the course. They look good but they have to be durable in order to really be useful. As cool an idea as Golfdotz are, I can sum up my experience with them in one word: gone. I could not for the life of me get them to stay on my golf ball for more than a couple of swings. In fact, the first shot I hit with the driver left my Titleist without a single decal left. I tried several other types of balls and the results were the same, two swings, no more Golfdotz.
To be completely fair, I am a high swing speed, high spin player, so I had several friends of mine, with varying slower swing speeds, give them a try as well. Encouragingly their decals stayed in place much better. Though none lasted the entire round, several lasted well into the back nine. This would be close to the equivalent of a sharpie dot. I would say to be safe reapplication every nine holes would be necessary to for the average golfer.
Balls
Final ThoughtsThough Golfdotz won’t make it into my bag for obvious reasons, I still think they are a nifty new product idea. While not a necessity by any means they give an alternative to the sharpie marker for those golfer more artistically inclined. Durability is definitely an issue but I believe most golfers will find they last longer than their golf balls do, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Pick some up and give them a try yourself.

Blizzard in the Midwest/Golf Discount Coupons/My Birdie Book/Wisconsin

A monster storm was bearing down on the middle of the United States on Tuesday, with freezing rain and sleet pelting several states from Texas through Ohio ahead of blizzard conditions expected overnight.
Parts of nine states — Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio — were covered by a blizzard warning Tuesday morning, TODAY's Al Roker reported.
Early indications were ominous. Parts of southwest Missouri already had 6 inches of snow by 8 a.m. About 3,000 were without power in Ohio, 2,600 in Oklahoma. Roads were ice-covered and virtually impassable in several states.

The storm cut a 2,100-mile swathe across the country and has the potential to impact about 100 million people, or one-third of the U.S. population, according to The Weather Channel.
The National Weather Service's national map of advisories and warnings was a patchwork of different color-coded alerts, showing a country under siege by the storm.
As the storm began its trek, it brought a bit of everything: ice, sleet and snow — even tornadoes in the South were possible. School districts, universities and legislatures closed; airlines canceled more than 4,500 flights; and residents rushed to gather supplies, anticipating they might have to dig out or hunker down.
Forecasters predicted a hodge-podge of brutal winter weather — 24 inches of snow in some places, up to an inch of ice plus snow in others. Making matters far worse was the expectation of shivering cold and winds gusting to near 60 mph.
"What really gives us nightmares is the prospect of widespread power outages," said Jeff Rainford, chief of staff for St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay. "It's cross-our-fingers time."
When the snow finally ends, bitter cold will set in. Temperatures in some parts of the Midwest will dip well below zero. Gusty winds will blow all of that snow. Visibility will be virtually zero at times.
The system was also expected to cause disruption in the Northeast; more than 200 schools were closed in Pennsylvania, NBC News reported, and similar announcements were expected from the New York tri-state area and up through New England.

Airport travel chaos Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport closed for a short Tuesday morning due to an ice storm, then reopened one runway an hour later.
The freeze closed schools and snarled road traffic across much of North Texas. Dallas Area Rapid Transit has suspended rail service because of the storm.
In Oklahoma, Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City and Tulsa International Airport were both closed.

Across the country, airlines canceled more than 4,500 flights Tuesday, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.com.
The total for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday is already more than 7,700, it added.
Airports in Newark, N.J., and Chicago are the hardest hit, FlightAware said, with more than 600 cancellations in each. Chicago is a hub for United and American, and Continental has a hub in Newark.
JetBlue is canceling flights in and out of New York's JFK airport for the rest of Tuesday, with some flights to resume Wednesday afternoon. It plans to shut down its Boston flying Tuesday night through Thursday morning.
Delta said it canceled more than 625 flights for Tuesday.
Driving wasn't any easier. The Iowa Department of Transportation said most roadways in the state were partially or completely covered with a combination of ice and snow. Officials warned that drifts and whiteout from blowing snow make travel treacherous, if not impossible, in some areas.
Deadly wrecks were reported in Minnesota and Kansas. But accidents in Missouri were surprisingly few given the increasingly worsening conditions. Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum said he drove along Interstate 44 in St. Louis County and went miles without seeing another car as people apparently heeded warnings to stay home.
"It was pretty deserted out there," Nothum said.
Storm predictions were so dire that public officials, street crews and utility workers have been in place since Monday in anticipation of the worst. The St. Louis-based utility company AmerenUE had nearly 500 of its own linemen ready to go and was bringing in another 800 from as far away as Michigan.
Massive amounts of ice predicted south of St. Louis, followed by strong winds, could cause a repeat of 2006, when the ice knocked out power in parts of Missouri for weeks.
Hardware stores were selling out of snow shovels, backup generators and ice-melting salt. Grocery stores doing all they could to keep supplied with the staples.
