The golf belt buckle – more than fashion

Belt Buckles have been integral in men’s western and business attire for many years.  Since Anthony Kim immersed on the PGA tour flaunting his good luck AK over sized belt buckle, the trend has exploded.  In 2006 he began styling his initials because he said nobody sponsoring him was going to create a buckle like Tiger’s Nike Swoosh, so he personalized it.  Well the trend took.  All the hippest dressed PGA and LPGA players are wearing flashy buckles.  Rory Sabatini, Anthony Kim, Camillo Villegas, and Rory McIlroy are among the flashiest PGA professionals leading the trend. Well leave it to golfers to make it into a lucrative business.  Bettinardi a company that sponsors Angel Cabrera sells custom belt buckles for 175$.  Luckily there are plenty of used and unique belt buckles out there that can be found at pawn shops.
I admit, I love chunky belt buckles.  I routinely wear them with my jeans and with the right slacks on the golf course.  Unfortunately there are not many options for women in the golf department for clothing let alone flashy belt buckles. I have browsed just about every women s department store and golf shop in the Bay area and it is tough to find stylish women’s golf apparel.
So why is there such a buzz and following over the accessory?  First of all, golf attire is boring.  It is conservative and predictable.  If we are trying to grow the game of golf in adolescents, the worst thing you can do is give them a heavy thread polo shirt with a logo in the left hand corner and pleated khakis.  IF you want to play good, you gotta look good!  This is especially the case with women.  Unfitted frumpy pastels are not going to cut it.  Hopefully the etiquette of golf is here to stay, but I am all for the hip accessorizing that men and women have latched onto in the past few years.  Some think that the belt buckles are too flashy.  Tatoo Golf and Rory Sabatini has gotten a lot of flack for the skull and crossbones belt buckle going so far as to threaten whether or not he should be allowed into Augusta.  Well, back to the last paragraph…are we trying to keep the youth from finding the game of golf more than frumpy?  Style and individualism develop confidence and confidence improves athletic performance.
Tattoo Golf Belt Buckle
Now, this is MY theory on golf belt buckles.  Notice how those wearing the chunky, flashy buckles all wear their pants low around the hips.  Only a physical therapist would think this.  The belt buckle is situated in the center of the pelvis (between the Anterior Superior Iliac Spines).  I think it enhances core stability.  It just feels secure situated around your pelvis (rather than your waist) which ultimately helps improve kinesthetic awareness.  Improved awareness of where your body is (in space) improves controlled mobility of the pelvis on the hips in the back swing and dissociation during the kinematic sequence in the down swing.
This is a no brain-er.  The golf belt buckle has the potential to change the future of golf.  More style and more core stability means more young golfers playing golf pain-free for many years.

Wisconsin golf fans aren’t easily impressed, even at the PGA Championship

Dustin Johnson
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — If Missouri is the Show Me State, then Wisconsin must be the Show Me Something Really Good State, at least when it comes to professional golf.
The fans who attended the 92nd PGA Championship this week at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wis., have been exemplary. They persevered through fog delays and rain storms and have been admirably respectful and courteous to players and fellow spectators alike. (Phil Mickelson isn't often addressed as "Mr. Mickelson" by autograph-seeking fans.) But when it comes to applauding shots, these Wisconsin fans have been positively stingy.
Maybe it's that famous Midwestern reserve, but the only way players could elicit a lively cheer from the fans at Whistling Straits was to almost hole their approach shots or drive the ball 350 yards. (Fans at majors are generally more profligate with their applause, and rowdier fans at regular Tour stops have been known to cheer Tiger Woods after he emerges from a Port-O-Potty.)
Jon Tattersall, a Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher and coach of PGA Tour player Heath Slocum, noticed that Whistling Straits was unusually quiet for a major while walking the course with Slocum's group on Friday.
"We were on the par-3 seventh, 229 yards with the flag back right about four feet from the edge and the wind off to the right," Tattersall said. "Heath hit it dead straight and it landed 15 feet left of the pin and rolled to the back of the green. It was a spectacular shot, and it didn't get a ripple (of applause)."
Tattersall added that some of the hole placements were so difficult that players would be foolish to go after them.
"A lot of times, if a guy hits it close to one of those holes, it was a mistake," Tattersall said.
Not that Wisconsin fans don't love their golf. Bob Uecker, legendary Brewers broadcaster and patron saint of Milwaukee sports, said that when it comes to golf, Wisconsinites know their stuff. Uecker himself is an avid player, getting on the course as much as he can in Arizona during the offseason. Uecker recently returned to the broadcast booth after heart surgery in late April, and he's already begun chipping and putting.
"It's a great place for golf," Uecker said, listing Whistling Straits and Erin Hills, site of the 2017 U.S. Open, among the gems in the region.
Especially if you like the more serene aspects of the game. Tattersall recounted Slocum's tee shot on the par-3 17th, the picturesque 220-yarder that plays uphill over fescue with Lake Michigan off to the left. Slocum hit a hybrid off the tee in the rain on Friday, and neither Slocum nor Tattersall saw it land. The fans around the green were as quiet as a funeral.
"We looked at each other and thought, 'Bunker?'" Tattersall said. "We got to the green and saw Heath's ball 15 feet right of the hole."

New Year’s Resolutions for Golfers
Golf Tips
It’s that time again for golfers to make their New Year’s resolutions for next season. Here are some ideas to get you started:
For the New Golfers
* Hit it straight: Slow down that swing, place those hands correctly, and hit the ball straight. There is no more satisfying thing in golf that watching the ball fly straight off the tee.
* Temper, temper: Learn some self control when on the golf course. No one likes golfing with a club thrower.
For the Weekend Warriors
* Learn courtesy: This may seem like a foreign language to many weekend warriors but this year try to be a bit more courteous to other golfers. Maybe you should yell fore when your tee shot is headed towards the group on the next green.
* Remember – The ball is not your enemy: The ball is not your enemy, so stop trying to kill it. Most of the duffs, shags, shanks, and just plain bad shots made by weekend warriors happen because of swinging the club way too hard. Slow down and create a nice and even swing. You will be pleased with the results.
For our Future Touring Pros Who Aren’t Quite Pros Yet
* One step at a time: Everyone wants to improve their golf game but you want to really take it to the next level. The best thing for you to do is pace yourself. You aren’t winning the US Open this year but that doesn’t mean you cannot take small steps in that direction. One step at a time and you will find yourself one step closer to your goal.
* Practice, practice, practice: Your game is not going to get any better unless you work on it. Find the time each day to work on your swing and always consult the advice of a professional if you are truly serious about improving.
Most likely you’ve heard all this before, but just focus on one of these actions for your golf resolution will make a huge change in how well you play the game and how much you enjoy it.

Rock River Hills Country Club in Horicon Wisconsin offers another great golf discount coupon in the 2011 Birdie Book

Rock River Hills Golf Club is built along the Rock River with 13 of the 18 holes involving water.  Rock River Hills G.C. is considered the best kept secret in Southern Wisconsin.  A very picturesque course with an abundance of wildlife roaming its terrain.

The course has a 4 1/2 star rating by Golf Digest and is labeled as a "Hidden Gem" by Gary D'Amato.  The par 70 course is referred to as a target golf course that presents the experienced golfer with rich rewards for accurate shots.  There are three tee boxes on each hole which enables enjoyable play regardless of your playing ability.

A full service pro-shop and clubhouse are available for your every need.  Our dining room overlooks the Rock River at the southern end of the Horicon Marsh Wildlife Refuge.  The scenery is breathtaking.

This one is worth the trip.  If you are in Madison, Milwaukee, or the Fox Valley don't let the drive bother you.  The savings will offset the drive.  Get your coupons at www.mybirdiebook.com.

Waupun's Rock River Country Club has joined the 2011 Birdie Book the best golf discount coupons in Wisconsin

The front nine is a Links style course demanding accuracy off the tee and precision to the green. With 29 sand traps on this nine and many hazards, the front nine is a challenge for every golfer.
The Back Nine has many old and mature trees waiting to knock down a wayward tee shot or a missed approach.  Many of the holes play as they did when the course opened in 1927.  The present layout of the "Old Nine" holes was completed in the early 80's.  At that time, the course was lengthened and changed so that only a couple of original holes remain

Get out and take on this course this summer, but don't do it without picking up your 2011 Birdie Book at http://www.mybirdiebook.com/.

Reedsburg Country Club has joined the 2011 Birdie Book with a great golf discount coupon.

Reedsburg Country Club rewards accuracy and demands strategy.  Don't be fooled by the yardage.  This course will challenge you on even the shortest holes.  Every tee shot presents you with a choice.  Do you try and set up for the short iron and a birdie opportunity or do you play for the safe side of the fairway and keep the ball in play? All eighteen holes have either out of bounds or a lateral water hazard on one or both sides. Then there is the meandering creek that crosses in front of five of the holes near the green. Reedsburg

One of the things you will notice about Reedsburg Country Club is a unique blend of old and new golf course architecture.  Only three of the original nine holes that were built in 1925 remain.  In 1977 the award winning design team of Killian and Nugent teamed up to expand the layout out to 18 championship holes.  The result is a challenging course that provides variety at every turn.  You will find a mixture of small elevated greens protected by pot bunkers and more generously sized undulating greens that can leave you with the potential to three-putt at any time.

Did I mention that the greens are fast?  We take great pride in our greens.  Hitting to the right side of the pins is critical.  We like our greens fast and true.  You will too.  Our everyday green fees are very reasonable. In the Spring and Fall of the year we make them even more attractive.  Be sure and check out our special rates for groups as well.

People drive from all over to golf this course.  The above description says it all.  Get your 2011 Birdie Book at http://www.mybirdiebook.com/ and start saving when the snow melts.

Tagalong Golf Course in Birchwood Wisconsin is a great course addition to the 2011 Birdie Book

History

"history"

Tagalong was originally built as a private golf course for Frank D. Stout. Construction on the course began about 1916 and it was first played on around 1919. Frank Stout was said to have been the fifth wealthiest man in Chicago at the time. The course was built for himself and his guest only.

Scottish Imports
Rumor has it that Mr. Stout had the bent grass for the greens cut in Scotland and shipped across the ocean, along with a world-famous architect and a member of the Scottish nobility. The course itself was intended to be a duplicate of St. Andrews. Fourteen miles of pipe were used to irrigate the greens and fairways. The course features huge, elevated greens surrounded by deep, grass bunkers. As a gala to commemorate the opening of the course in 1925, Stout arranged to have an exhibition round featuring the US Open Champion and the British Open Champion.

The Buildings

Six buildings were originally built at Tagalong.

  • The main clubhouse is a gem of the old Stonemason's art. The Gothic Arches with their pastel colors of cut stone are topped by curving thatched roofs.
  • The Pumphouse, which is situated on the shore of Red Cedar Lake, was built to house the large pumps used to water the entire grounds. This building was also used for a waiting station as the only way to enter the estate was by water.
  • What is now Stonehaven was originally built to store the equipment used to maintain the golf course and grounds.
  • On the east side of the property lies the remainder of the buildings, all built to maintain the estate in its unprecedented beauty. The caretaker's home sported a grand stone chimney, the Bunkhouse was used to house and feed the grounds crew. The stable was built for the blacksmith and the team of horses used in building and maintaining the golf course.

In an excerpt taken from an article about Tagalong sometime following World War II the author states, "The value of this property as shown on the Barron County Atlas of twenty years ago (about 1930) is $500,000. It is the writer's considered opinion that, if the truth were known, it cost Mr. Stout more than twice the amount shown on the Atlas".

How Tagalong Got Its Name
Tagalong got its name in this manner: It was the custom in the family that, whenever anything new was acquired or built and needed to be named, Mr. Stout would put up a gold piece as a prize. Mrs. Stout put the name "Tagalong" into the hat and won the gold piece. She suggested "Tagalong" because Mr. Stout always complained that the children wanted to "tag along" every time he went to the golf course.

If you have not played this course you better put it on the list.  Bring the whole family and plan the summer vacation around this great course.  Once again they have offered the Birdie Book a very generous offer for you to try them out.  Don't delay.  Get your 2011 Birdie Book at www.mybirdiebook.com

-AN INSIDE LOOK IN TO WISCONSIN’S STATEWIDE DISCOUNT GOLF BOOK – “MY” BIRDIE BOOK

Recommended by the WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL

I’m sure everyone knows that over the years Wisconsin golf course green fees have fluctuated quite a bit.  This is a direct result of our ever changing economy and what our great courses are doing to keep you coming back.  Through the golf show & email polls we’ve taken it’s apparent that WI golfers obviously want to play more and try new courses.  Money is tight and it’s become much more difficult for the average person in Wisconsin to achieve this.  It’s a very cyclical  process. If golfers can’t afford to play as much or travel to go play the new, interesting course they’ve been thinking about than the golf courses suffer too.  We have so many amazing golf courses in Wisconsin and some have even started to close their doors because of the current economic state.  It’s not all gloomy though as we have talked to many courses that have started to see an upswing in business.  It’s good to hear positive news!

Why am I telling you this?   Simple, this is the reason we decided to create the Birdie Book.  Golfers and Golf Courses needed an avenue to bring one another together during not so positive times.  Yes, we’ve all seen local discount golf cards, expensive golf packages, and even other books that might have a few golf course specials but nothing that really worked for both parties.  The golfer and the golf courses are what’s important here.  While these other avenues worked OK the Birdie Book offers something completely different, more aggressive, and certainly much more affordable to Wisconsin golfers and courses.
“My” Birdie Book is a simple, full color, high quality publication that gets released yearly and for 2011 currently has partnered with over 170 amazing Wisconsin Golf Courses.  It’s one book that covers our entire state and each of these golf courses has a minimum of two aggressive tee time specials for golfers to take advantage of.  It has double to triple the courses of any other Wisconsin golf discount options and you can purchase it for only $20.00.  In 2011 we did something new and added some great golf shops across the state as well.

Here’s why it works.  First and foremost the Birdie Book does NOT charge golf courses to participate like most other discount type companies.  Our thought process as a local, based out of Madison, Wisconsin born company is that the courses shouldn’t have to pay to discount their services or tee times.  Adding to that philosophy, as a golfer I wouldn’t want to and won’t personally pay $75.00 to $400.00 for for golf specials.  That’s where the sponsors come in that you see on our website and in the actual Birdie Book.  These are the the people that we ow a huge thank you too for making it all come together.  Without companies like TaylorMade, Addidas, Laser Link, Nevada Bob’s, and a few others the book wouldn’t be possible.  It would either be much more expensive for the golfer to purchase or the golf courses would have to pay to participate.  In our opinion both are bad options which is why we greatly appreciate our sponsor partnerships and we ask you as Birdie Book owners to keep that in mind when purchasing your new clubs, rangefinder, or golf equipment in general.

The third part of the Birdie Book is the fact that kids and junior golf programs across the state also benefit from it.  We are partnering with many high school golf teams, non profits, and other organizations that use the Birdie Book as a fund raising tool.  What a great way for them to maintain their equipment needs while promoting courses around the state.

As I mentioned above the Birdie Book is cyclical.   From the great National Sponsors, to bringing golfers and golf courses together, and lastly supporting junior golf, everyone benefits.  It really is amazing and we hope you feel the same.  Thanks for taking the time to check out the Birdie Book and why we’re here.  If you ever have any questions or concerns please call or email Joe, Elliot, or Brett.  We are located in Madison and want to here from you.  Have a great Holiday Season and keep checking back for updates!

GOLF Magazine Interview: Matt Kuchar - Birdie Book, Wisconsin's Discount Golf Book's Golfer of The Week!

Matt Kuchar, GOLF Magazine Interview

"I think I have the knowledge now that winning major championships is something that I can do."

What's been the biggest adjustment for you now that you're considered one of the Tour's elite?
It's probably the extra time commitment that's involved — everything from signing extra autographs to handling additional media requests. I used to be able to practice as much as I wanted to, and come and go pretty much as I pleased, but that's started to change a bit recently. It's a tough balancing act when you have to add an extra hour or more to take care of things that didn't used to be part of your normal routine.
Are there any extra perks?
No, not yet. It's a lot more fun. It's fun to see yourself on a magazine cover, you know, fun things like that. You get a lot more support, a lot more fanfare. I seem to get a lot more phone calls from old friends that I haven't caught up with in a while.
You've had numerous highlights this season, but which one would you say has been your personal favorite?
Having the kids run out on the green with my wife after The Barclays. We got some fun pictures of them running out on the green. It's something as a player, and then as a father, that you really aspire to — you can't wait to have that happen to you. It's fun to watch it happen to other people, and you really can't wait for that to happen to yourself.
Let's talk about the PGA Championship. You led for 36 holes. What did you learn about yourself that week?
Well, there seems to be a lesson in everything. We all aspire to win major championships, and to get myself in contention, to have the lead after 36 holes, tells me that if I can do it for 36 holes, then I really ought to be able to do it for 72 holes. I think I have the knowledge now that this is in my grasp, that winning major championships is something that I can do.
What were you thinking coming down the stretch at The Barclays to keep yourself in the zone?
I'm always a competitor. I'm not there just to have a good time. I want to play well and perform well. It was nice that I ended up having a chance even though I was a few strokes back going into Sunday. It's a difficult course, and I made some birdies early. And then it was really great to make a couple of birdies late. I birdied 16 and 17 and was able to sneak into a playoff.
You've mentioned how important it is to improve. What's on your agenda for 2011?
Even if you finish the year at No. 1 in the world, and Tiger Woods has done this, you can still probably get better. There are so many aspects of the game that you can work on — you can drive it father, you can drive it straighter, you can hit your irons higher and more consistently, you can get better with your wedges, and you can always putt better. There's never an end to that striving to get better in golf. It's a great thing about the game.
Your dad, Peter, was quite visible when you burst onto the scene in the late '90s, but he's receded into the background.
I had great success when he caddied for me, and I've had great success now that I've got a regular caddie. It was great when I was an amateur and didn't have any money.
What's it like to be on the road all the time?
My wife travels just about every week, as do the kids. It's easy to stay busy, although what we're doing every day I don't always know. We always stay with friends — it's easier. You have a kitchen and a living room, a place to go watch TV and relax instead of having to be quiet all the time because you're afraid you'll wake the kids.
How do you know so many people everywhere?
[Laughs.] I don't know! Golf's a great game, and you meet a lot of people along the way. I've met a lot of people who've invited me to stay with them over the years, so I guess it just adds up!

Located just two miles east of Osceola, Wisconsin on County Road M and just 45 minutes from the Twin Cities, KKGC first opened for play in 1990 with only the front nine holes available.  The back nine holes were added in 1995 to complete our challenging 18-hole facility.  As the name implies, a crooked creek winds through the course offering challenges to the golfer while showing off the countryside wildlife and floral beauty.
With the front nine greens being generous in size and somewhat level, the back nine greens are smaller with more pitch and plenty of undulations to test even the experienced golfer.
While the fairways provide generous landing areas, water and DNR wetlands can come into play on 11 holes with an errant or miscalculated shot.  The golfer who knows when to lay up and when to go for it will be richly rewarded.
